Dog breeders from time immemorial have found it hard, if not impossible, to define the word 'quality'; a wider circle of human beings have found it equally difficult to define the word 'personality.' We all know it when we see it, as Mr. Gladstone said when he confessed that though he knew an elephant when he saw one, he was damned if he could define it.
The 3 R's. Respect of the individuals who went before, reverence of finding of finding and holding these people in high regard, and the romance of the history and studying the lore of the breed.

It's an art that few people are actually very good at.
Look at positives before you look at negatives because eventually you're going to get stuck with negatives. I'd rather say I like the mouth on this one better, than the one on that one than I don't like the mouth on that one. If you look for virtues you wont go wrong. If you look for faults you might be throwing the best dog in the ring out. And the one that looks different than all the others is not necessarily a bad dog, it might be the best.
No breed can hope to improve unless breeders are dissatisfied with anything short of perfection. Self-satisfaction is stultifying. A breeder should live in a state of dissatisfaction and abounding hope.
No one with any knowledge of the subject will breed to a dog merely on pedigree...a good dog makes a pedigree good, and not the other way
Never does pedigree information become more important than information on the dog itself
Some dog breeders get lucky and find a blend that more by luck than judgement gives them an outstanding specimen. The really gifted breeders can produce generations of top quality dogs.
