Perro de Presa Canario II group FCI – molosser
Origin: Canary Islands (Tenerife and Gran Canaria)
Destination: guard and defend, help with the cattle, hunting, for short time used for dog fights. Now still plays his old functions, but also became show dog and can be used in obedience, weight pulling, protection sports etc.
Character: Very strong. Distrustful for strangers. Has very strong inclinations to guard and defend. From descendents he inherited also instincts to help with the cattle. Temperament is vary impulsive. He don’t bark much, but when he barks his voice is very strong and clear. Very friendly with his family, with strangers can be dangerous.
Weight and high at the elbows: males: 61-66 cm and 45-57kg (99-125Ibs) ; females: 57-62 cm and 40-50 kg (88-110Ibs).
Coat: Short, thick- mostly on the neck. Without under coat.
Colour: All kinds of brindle – from very light to warm dark shades; fawn and sandy. In original standard of Presa Canario also black colour is acceptable; in the FCI standard black is not acceptable. The standard allows white markings to 20% (FCI standard says that they should be put to minimum). Most frequently white markings occur on the chest, also can be place on the muzzle, feet, end of the tail, belly. Always should have a black mask.

Training: should be trained.
Susceptibility for training: high, very intelligent breed (sometimes can be stubborn). This breed likes to work.
With kids: very good when properly raised.
With strangers: when he is with his owner he will accept strangers, without owner he is distressful and can be really dangerous.
With other dogs: dominant. Not advised to keep two males together.
With other animals: with those that he lives with, he can be good and friendly, he can try to hunt on small animals.
Place of living: he can live everywhere – in city, in the country etc when he have enough mental and physical stimulation provided.
